5 Questions with...

war tapes
Becca Popkin of WAR TAPES
www.myspace.com/wartapes

1. If I knew absolutely nothing about War Tapes, how would you describe the group’s music to me?
-- dark melodic heart quaking doom pop

2. If I were to buy your new self-titled album, what songs should I pay particular attention to and why?
-- mind is ugly" and "dreaming of you" because they represent the broadest range of our sound and musical style. while mind is ugly is uptempo and intense, dreaming of you is slower and more melancholy.

3. When and where did the band form, and where did the name come from? -- we formed in downtown LA almost 2-3 years ago. neil and becca are from boston originally, william is from southern california, and matt is from hawaii. the name comes from two words that when put together to us represented our sound. the dichotomy between the two words "war" and "tapes" really stood out to us when we were thinking about band names. we liked the intensity of the word war and the nostalgic feeling of the word tapes.

4. What was your worst on stage experience? What was your best?
-- our worst on stage experience was probably at the wiltern in LA last December when neil's mic cable accidentally became wrapped around becca's ankle on stage. as he tried to yank it free not knowing where it was caught, he tightened and tightened it like a noose. her ankle was bleeding by the time the show ended. luckily it didn't get caught on her until the last song otherwise it could have been much worse.

our best onstage experience is much harder to pinpoint because every show has moments that make it the best for us, we love playing live and have had so many amazing opportunities to play opening for some of our favorite bands that each show is special to us. even the show mentioned above really can't even be described as a "Worst" experience because it was also one of our favorite shows.

5. Do you think that the Internet (whether it be Internet radio, legal downloading, MySpace, streaming audio, etc.) is a good tool for musicians or is it a bad thing because it hinders profits?
-- To us the internet has been a really good way of getting our music out. we find it to be a great way of sharing art with people, and we definitely believe that the internet has allowed more artists and bands to get the exposure, fans, and audiences they may have never otherwise had the opportunity to have. as with anything in life, with the good there comes the bad, but for us it has been great.
