5 Questions with...

Topaz of TOPAZ AND MUDPHONIC
www.topazmusic.com

1. If I knew absolutely nothing about Topaz and Mudphonic, how would you describe the group’s music to me?
-- Gritty blues and riff rock with psychedelic overtones.

2. If I were to buy your new album Music for Dorothy, what songs should I pay particular attention to and why?
-- I really like Twin Oaks - its about my childhood and growing up in Dripping Springs TX and how things have changed. I also really dig Take Your Clothes Off and Fly w/ Me. Lonely is a big crowd pleaser at shows, it is the first song on the album and it's the first song we wrote as a band.

3. When and where did the band form, and where did the name come from? -- We began playing around in late 2006 in Austin TX. These days in the age of myspace and google its almost impossible to find a band name that isn't in use so after much deliberation we came up with Mudphonic a made up word that we felt described the music.

4. What was your worst on stage experience? What was your best?
-- I love playing shows in New Orleans during Jazz Fest. Everyone there is all about the music and you've got music going all night until sunrise. There are so many great musicians exchanging ideas- there's nothing like it, its so inspiring.

The weirdest though not necessarily the worst was at Hal's in Laredo. It's like a huge Chuck E. Cheese for adults I mean its massive and hardly anybody was there and the people there definitely weren't into us. The cool part was we got to play some really badass games and they had huge $3 margaritas.

5. Do you think that the Internet (whether it be Internet radio, legal downloading, MySpace, streaming audio, etc.) is a good tool for musicians or is it a bad thing because it hinders profits?
-- The internet has been great for independent musicians. It has been the downfall of major labels and major labels need a wake up call.
